Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film can be broadly classified into two types: plasticized PVC film, also known as soft PVC film, and unplasticized PVC film, or hard PVC film. Hard PVC accounts for roughly two-thirds of the market, while soft PVC makes up the remaining one-third. Soft PVC is typically used for flooring, ceilings, and leather‑like surface layers; however, because it contains plasticizers—what distinguishes it from hard PVC—it tends to become brittle and is less stable during storage, thus limiting its applications. In contrast, hard PVC contains no plasticizers, offering superior flexibility, ease of molding, resistance to brittleness, and being non‑toxic and environmentally friendly, with a long shelf life, making it highly valuable for development and application. At its core, PVC film is a vacuum‑formed plastic sheet used as a surface‑covering material for various panels; accordingly, it is also referred to as decorative film or adhesive‑backed film. It finds applications across numerous industries, including construction materials, packaging, and pharmaceuticals. Among these, the construction materials sector accounts for the largest share, approximately 60%, followed by the packaging industry, with several smaller‑scale applications in other fields.
The production process for PVC film is not complicated. A typical production line consists of a calender, a printing unit, a back-coating machine, and a slitting unit. The process begins with direct‑action mixing in the calender, followed by roller rotation and high‑temperature calendaring to produce a film just 0.3 to 0.7 mm thick. Simultaneously, the printing unit applies decorative patterns to the front side, while the back‑coating machine applies a protective coating to the reverse surface. Don’t underestimate this back coat—it is a key factor ensuring the superior performance of PVC film. Made from specialized materials, it acts as a high‑energy affinity agent; thanks to it, the PVC film bonds tightly to medium‑density fiberboard or other substrates, remaining adhesive‑free for ten to fifteen years. By contrast, the main drawback of conventional self‑adhesive films is their tendency to delaminate over time. Because the entire manufacturing process takes place at elevated temperatures—up to 220°C inside the calender—the resulting PVC film exhibits excellent light resistance and fire retardancy, guaranteeing its high quality. Of course, this places stringent demands on the equipment; a complete production line typically costs around 39 million marks, equivalent to approximately RMB 160 million. On the other hand, the production process itself is relatively simple, and the machines deliver high throughput. Thus, when viewed holistically, PVC film is essentially a low‑investment, high‑output product.
